Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) is the collective name for a number of activities to detect intelligent extraterrestrial life. SETI projects use scientific methods to search for electromagnetic transmissions from civilizations on distant planets. The United States government contributed to earlier SETI projects, but recent work has been primarily funded by private sources.

There are great challenges in searching across the sky for a first transmission that could be characterized as intelligent, since its direction, spectrum and method of communication are all unknown beforehand. SETI projects necessarily make assumptions to narrow the search, and thus no exhaustive search has so far been conducted.

Therefore Seti I began to construct a chapel dedicated to himself in the southern part of this temple He never completed the chapel but Ramesses II did and he also constructed the a great wall and the two pylons of unburned brick These created a border between the two courtyards At the time an avenue of sphinxes passed between the portal of the first pylon and

How far do the signals sent out from SETI travel?
Q. Do they just travel forever, if we have been sending these signals for 30 years then they will have travelled 30 light years distance but what is the limit, will they just keep travelling to the edge of the galaxy or does the signal have only enough strength to travel a finite distance?

A. SETI doesn't send out signals--they only listenforpossible signals from other civilizations. If they did, the signal would travel forever, in theory. How far out it would be dectable is another matter. That would depend on the level of technology of any civilization that might be in a position to detect teem. A realy advanced planet might be able to detect any such signals hundreds of light years out.

How do SETI search for extra-terrestiral life?
Q. I know that they search for radio signals, but I don't know specifically how they do it. Please tell me, thank you.

A. Not only do they search for radio signals, but they search for patterns or data within the signals. This is accomplished with many listening stations and some distributed resource calculations. They get volunteers to run some of the code on home PCs. The code executes a Fast Fourier Transform and converts the raw signal into frequencies. Noise is quickly discernible from a signal. Then it has to be proved that this was not from a terrestrial source of from a man-made satellite. So far no luck.

How much money has been "wasted", I mean spent, by SETI over the last 30 years?
Q. How much money has been "wasted", I mean spent, by SETI over the last 30 years?

A. The United States Government contributed to SETI early on, but recent work has been primarily funded by private sources. So nothing since the early 90's when it went to private funding. In 1960, Cornell University astronomer Frank Drake performed the first modern SETI experiment, named "Project Ozma", after the Queen of Oz in L. Frank Baum's fantasy books. Drake used a 25-meter-diameter radio telescope at Green Bank, West Virginia, to examine the stars Tau Ceti and Epsilon Eridani near the 1.420 gigahertz marker frequency. A 400 kilohertz band was scanned around the marker frequency, using a single-channel receiver with a bandwidth of 100 hertz. The information was stored on tape for off-line analysis. He found nothing of great interest.… [cont.]
