Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) is the collective name for a number of activities people undertake to search for intelligent extraterrestrial life. SETI projects use scientific methods to search for electromagnetic transmissions from civilizations on distant planets. The United States government contributed to earlier SETI projects, but recent work has been primarily funded by private sources. There are great challenges in searching across the sky for a first transmission that could be characterized as intelligent, since its direction, spectrum and method of communication are all unknown beforehand. SETI projects necessarily make assumptions to narrow the search, and thus no exhaustive search has been conducted so far. Radio experimentsMicrowave window as seen by a ground based system. From NASA report SP-419: SETI - the Search for Extraterrestrial IntelligenceMany radio frequencies penetrate our atmosphere quite well, and this led to radio telescopes that investigate the cosmos using large radio antennas. Furthermore, the earth emits considerable radio radiation as a byproduct of communications such as TV and radio, and these radiations would be easy to recognize as artificial due to their repetitive nature and narrow bandwidths. If this is typical, one way of discovering an extraterrestrial civilization might be to detect non-natural radio emissions from a location outside our solar system. From Wikipedia under the

How far would they be for SETI to detect them at minimum strenght and still recognize it as intelligent. So Karman, if an earth standard TV signal strength broadcast from Alpha centari, we would not be able to recognize it (as an intelligent signal) with the most powerfull antena on earth? Asked by pxn8888 - Mon Jun 19 15:54:32 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I think your question is a bit vague. If they had a TV transmitter that was very powerful, we could receive the signal no matter what the distance. Of course the technology is not conceivable for us. But what if they modulated a star? We could receive it from millions of light years away. But, since our galaxy is some 60k lyr across, it would be more likely to receive something from less than that. As to the power required to transmit a TV signal to say Alpha Centauri (4.35 lyr) given our current technology, let see. Here is a quick free space loss equation we will calculate for a microwave link to Alpha Centauri: Free space loss = 36.56 + 20Log10(Frequency) + 20Log10(Distance in miles) X dB = 36 + 20*L10(2.4Ghz) + 20*L10(4.3*5.8 [cont.] Answered by Karman V - Mon Jun 19 17:00:06 2006 Why do some people think SETI has nothing to do with our media? Q. When in fact, the same rules apply to the media we broadcast as to media potentially being broadcast from other intelligent life. After 2 light years our own signals break down into noise, just like sound does in less time. Asked by Willy Wong - Fri Nov 28 04:29:14 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. That and about ten other reasons are why I think it's too soon to worry about SETI. Answered by water_skipper - Fri Nov 28 13:03:56 2008 Does SETI 'listen' for signals from the stars that are known to have exoplanets?
Q. I have read that nearly 400 hundred 'exoplanets have been discovered since the first one in the 1990's. Has SETI focused at all on these 'star systems', as many of them may have possible habitable planets or moons? Asked by Larry - Tue May 18 16:29:03 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't know, but I have a relative who is a member of their organization, and she said to visit their "contact" page on their official website: I noticed there's a statement that if you are not the press, to contact the "info" email address and they will answer your question. You might suggest they write an article about this if they don't already have one.
