An author (sometimes, in reference to a woman author, authoress) is defined both as "the person who originates or gives existence to anything" and that authorship determines responsibility for what is created. The second entry goes on to clarify that, when using the term "author," the "anything" which is created is most usually associated with written work.

How do you address the author in the beginning of a letter to them?
Q. I'm writing a letter to an author of a short article that was published in the Boston Globe about famine in Ethiopia. I was wondering how I would properly address them in a former, professional manner. Dear Tom Haines? That's just not right... Please help!

A. "Dear Mr. Haines" or "Dear Sir" is perfectly acceptable.

How much interest is there in putting out another author site?
Q. I intend to start a site for aspiring authors and illustrators that will give people the ability to conversate with known authors, book publishers and literary agencies. The site will promote the work of younger authors and illustrators age10-18 years old. They can post their work on their profile, getting input from other authors and illustrators, enter contests, find links to literary agents, and cover everything an aspiring author or illustrator could need.

A. I think your idea of creating a website for young writers to reach out is a great idea, however, I would avoid having them post their work (at least the ones who are serious about their writing). Posting work online devalues the credibility of the work and would probably be a turn off to agents. That's the only thing I would change about your website.

What are the chances a author will get their first book published?
Q. Ive heard that it's really hard for a author to publish their first book. But how hard is it exactly what are the chances that a author will get their first book published? Ummm im not trying to publish anything... (im just wondering)

A. The chances of getting the very first novel you write published are very slim. Most first novels are not that well written. The writer is usually still learning his/her craft and improves with each subsequent novel written. I read somewhere that most authors sell the third book they have written, and this was the case with me and several other published friends. Probably less than 5% of all novels published by major publishing houses in any given year are by new authors. It is far more profitable for publishers to put out books by established authors who have a track record and a readership. However, a few lucky first time authors will sell their novel, and it could be you.
